Earth Science and Engineering Relating to the Nexus of Energy, Environment, and Water Resources
For nearly thirty years, my research has focused on earth science and engineering relating to the nexus of energy (shale gas and oil, nuclear, geothermal), environment, and water resources. So far in my career, I have published 80+ peer-reviewed journal articles, with a current Google Scholar h–index of 21 and i10-index of 39 (total citation: 1,647 as of 9/1/2015). In addition, I have authored 16 peer-reviewed (short) publications that are included in the Web of Science, 6 peer-reviewed book chapters, 21 peer-reviewed proceedings articles, 39 technical reports totaling over 3,000 pages, and 44 proceedings abstracts. Moreover, I have delivered 105, from a total of 170, presentations to scientific conferences and technical meetings (including professional peers, project reviewers, senior managers, industry, and representatives of government agencies). I have also been invited to lecture at 72 international universities/institutions/companies about my research work. I have been PI or co-PI for 40 projects with a total of $4.9 million, funded from DOE, NSF, oil & gas industry, and national labs. As a subject expert, I have been requested to perform a total of 203 manuscript reviews for 95 different journals on multidisciplinary topics, in addition to proposal reviews for NSF, DOE, U.S. Civilian Research & Development Program, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, Austrian Science Fund, ACS-Petroleum Research Fund, and other agencies. Over the past two years, I also participated in five panel reviews for NSF and EPA proposals. My recognized expertise is further evidenced in my receipt of a Fulbright Senior Specialist award in Environmental Science in 2010, Invitational Fellowship of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science in 2013, and election as a Fellow of Geological Society of America in 2013. Currently, I am Associate Editor for Vadose Zone Journal, Journal of Contaminant Hydrology and Journal of Earth Science, and Editorial Board Member for Journal of Environmental Radioactivity, Pedosphere and Advances in Geosciences. My research interests include: (1) sustainable shale hydrocarbon development from production decline and environmental concerns; (2) fracture-matrix interactions in the development of unconventional resources, geological repository, and geothermal energy; and (3) soil and groundwater remediation.
